View Full Version : Rookie guess -- Clutch problems (surprise surprise?)

Hey guys, I'm looking for help in diagnosis. I know its hard to do when things are explained, especially in text, but I wanted to get a few opinions. I'm not a mechanic, but I like to think I'm not totally inept, either. ;)

When my car is on, I'm getting a rattle.. or a knocking kinda. Sounds to me like loose bearings. When I engage the clutch the sound of it diminishes quite a bit. I'm not getting any slip that I notice right now, but the fact that when I engage the clutch it dwindles really makes me think it is the culprit.

Its late, so apologies if my description is poor. I'm off to bed, I'll check back tomorrow and update as I see fit.

Thanks guys!!

Sounds to me like you might have a bad throwout bearing, if ya stop by the shop and let me listen to it I could probably tell ya really quick :):hmm1:

I dont know what flywheel you have but if another member doesnt buy my Fidanza I will have one for $200.00 + shipping. Just FYI in case you end up needing one.

That would be fantastic! Where is your shop, and when are you there? I work up in Central Phoenix-ish (51 and Glendale) and don't generally get back down to our side of town until 5:30 or 6, depending on whether my boss goes home early or not.. ;)

I have the flywheel that came with my car. ^_^

I have chatter with my clutch pedal is out but thats normal for Fidanza flywheels. If you have a stock flywheel thats odd.

I really don't like the idea that it would rattle at all. Sounds to me like rickity manufacturing. I want my car to be nice and quiet. >.>

It didn't do this when I purchased the car, it's only started in the past month or so. And yes. Everything is stock with exception to the stereo and the wheels. I've done nothing to the engine/drive train.

You dont wanna replace the factory flywheel with an aftermarket when or if you have to replace the clutch? OH and the factory flywheel is around 900 bux.

No its not that I'm opposed to replacing with after market at all. I just don't want some weird noise coming out that makes it sound unhealthy. JS says he's got chatter when his clutch is disengaged, and that's most of the time. ^_^ I don't want to be sitting at a light and having my car chatter about. I want a nice smooth sound .. If that makes sense. =)

What it all boils down to is this: If I have to replace something, why not replace it with something better than what I had? I'm all about improving the performance of my vehicle. But I still want my car to sound healthy. ^_^

If you’re worried about how it sounds, you might want to stop modding while you still can. I’d take improved performance over sound any day...who cares what it sounds like. after resurfacing a new friction plate, and braking in the clutch properly, I never got the chatter....if your @ a red light, just push the clutch pedal in. the fidenza is like 60% lighter. The throttle response and revs are like a street bike. It’s not like aggressive cams or anything... the chatter isn't that bad.... you should hear a Detroit diesel and the normal idle those machines make

Eh. I guess that's part of my being a girl coming out. I like it to sound nice. And look nice. And perform better than the guy next to me. Why can't I have my cake and eat it too?! Heh.

I still have a warranty on my vehicle, and spoke with the service department where I got my car. They've been nothing but awesome for me since I purchased, and said they'd have a look at the car for me free of charge. (They replaced my sunroof, which wasn't even factory, free of charge when it broke, and the clutch sensor went out on it a while back and they had that fixed in-and-out in 30 minutes.) Given the year and mileage, he said I should not be having this issue.. I don't know. I'd still like to get FstrTib's opinion and look at my options before I commit to anything.

Fstrtib (Steve) knows tibs better then service managers @ Hyundai, but if it’s under warranty, by all means have Hyundai fix it.... that’s what you bought.... I wish some stuff of mine was under warranty....all that’s really left on my car that’s stock is like...wiper blades, some interior and maybe like the horn or something... I’ve had sun roof issues with both my tibs...the switches, not the glass or track but still.... also the clutch master cyl gave me problems ....small world..... must be easier for Hyundai to keep replacing the parts then to issue a recall or redesign the thing.... anyway, when done right, the clutch chatter isn't all that bad. And if they do have to replace your flywheel under warranty..... It’s in your best interest to pay for a 1/2 hour (at most) of labor for them to do a new (preferably aftermarket) clutch for you as well. If they say yes, you'll have to order the part and make sure it’s ready to be installed before they start pulling your transmission off the car. once they start they don't want to pull the car off the rack until everything is done, and chances are they need that lift and can't keep your car up on it until your clutch comes in if you order an aftermarket...and if you don't, have them see how much clutch life is left, it might be best to replace it with stock if that’s what you want, none the less, take advantage of the warranty part of hem pulling your car apart to get to the tran, that could get costly if you do it out of pocket.

Mm. If I could get them to put in my parts under their warranty labour, that would be hot. I didn't think they'd even consider it.

Oh jeez. Now I need to go shopping and learn wtf I'm doing. >.>

if you get a sprung clutch with the fidanza the "rattle" associated with an unsprung disk which is like stock and the fidanza, is gone but once you do a fidanza it's a whole different car in a good way:001_302:

New super awesome development on the way home (this was downright scary):

I was going approx. 75mph around a bend on one of the freeway interchanges (for you locals, I was on the south side of the 10 > 202 interchange) and it felt like, for lack of a better way to explain it, my clutch engaged for about a second. RPMs dropped, acceleration dropped, and then everything came back in a surge of power, just for another second. End result my car lagged and then lurched forward.

No idea WTF that is about, but it was creepy. =( I'm scared kinda, now. =S

Man, make it sound like I'm slackin on my oil change!! As of this morning, I was 23miles over my oil change mileage. =P I'll get it done tomorrow (as planned), wash her up, and take her out to Pav's if anyone else is gonna be there. ^_^

Ok, I had to bump this.. cause I WAS RIGHT.

Why I'm so excited about having my clutch starting to fail is beyond me, really... I just have to point out when I'm right. =P
