View Full Version : costom pcv cold air intake
jpv91120 01-21-2007, 01:58 PM Ok if you go to discount auto and get a universal cone filter. Then go to home depot and get a 3" fernco (ruber coupling), 3" streat 45, 3" regular 45, 3" 90, and a couple of feet of 3" pipe thats all you need to make a costom cold air intake. oh ya and a small can of pvc cement. total cost is less then $50.
If you take the cone filter and use the smallest rubber adapter it comes with you can put that inside the fernco and that will adapt it to the stock intake size and then the cone filter should fit perfect on the 3" pipe. Remove the battery, head light, and loosen the bolts for the relay box. Then just plumb your new intake, be very carful with the glue and getting it on your paint probably wouln't be good. Trust me you can feel the difference, i don't have any numbers on it but i could feel a differecne and a couple of other people could too

FYI i do not recommend this mod.... PVC piping is not meant to with stand engine temperatures as the average melting point for PVC material is between 140-150 degrees (your engine gets hotter than that just crusing around) Also PVC when heated creates toxic fumes which are hazardous to your health
deez337 01-21-2007, 04:17 PM Yep, PVC does release toxic fumes..... I am sure TC sells CAIs that dont kill you when heated.
jpv91120 01-21-2007, 04:49 PM where the pcv starts at it doesn't get hot enough to do anything to the pvc. havn't had any problems with it so far
The_wheelman 01-23-2007, 08:25 PM Dude you realize you could've bought an ebay Intake for the same price right? you also would've acually had a nice pretty polished, red, black, Blue mandrel bent intake, instead of look at my pvc piping, that's got to be heavy as hell, but if you're happy with it then ignore my comment but all i state is that you could've had something a little nicer for the same amount of money

jpv91120 01-23-2007, 11:03 PM ok, i have got a few things from ebay and have had nothing but problems. Recently i got lowering springs, they look like they are for a go cart and if you droped them on the ground they would probably break. Got a box for my 15's more crap. Just not worth going to ebay, you get what you pay for. Also to defend my intake you can't see any of the pvc once the plactic is on and all of the intaks that are made for the tiburon are 2.5", the pvc i used is 3" and sucks some good air. There is no way i would ever use ebay again, you think you are saving money but end up spending more in the end. I have 3 things that i have spent alot of money on from ebay just sitting in my garage because they are the bigist rip off you have ever seen.
Ebay does have a lot of good deals, you have to be a savy shopper, i've bought over 75 items off of ebay only one of which was a piece of crap (i lost 5 bucks big whoop)
Please do not take this as all of us ganging on you, i made my original post purely as a concern for the safety of anyone trying out this mod. We'd probably all be saying the same thing if another member came on here and made a DIY for cutting stock springs to drop your ride. Yeah it COULD work and that person MIGHT never have a problem but that doesn't mean that sharing this idea isn't dangerous.
jpv91120 01-24-2007, 11:47 PM the reason i thought of this is because i am a plumber. I do know that pvc isn't ment to get hot, that is why starting the pvc at the trottle body would be a bad idea. The reason for this section is so people can post some info and ideas, then other people can comment on them, bad or good. it might be a good thing if people gang up on me because i am no pro at modifying my car. only trying to help some people. on the ebay thing i have lost over $200 on the last 3 things i have got from ebay, great feedback on the sellers too.
ScassassinTib 01-30-2007, 12:19 PM The pvc will be ok with that heat ! Also what you should have did was got a 5 foot piece and got a pcv bender, like the heated blanket or a heat gun. then you could have made all of those bend with out the Couplings! Also don't uses plumbing pcv use electrical schedule 80, it is alot thicker and it will last for sure. Then Paint it the color you want. As for the Heat the electrical pvc schedule 80 will not be a problem at all ! it should cost you about 30 bucks and it will look great !
zeenon53 02-03-2007, 12:38 PM Dude, you got a PVC intake....lol. Nuff said!
openthewell 02-03-2007, 07:05 PM I purchased an Ebay CAI for about 50 shipped a year or so ago when I first got my tibby, but it worked perfectly until I upgraded to an Injen SRI merely for the CARB exemption. lol.
The injen beat the hell out of my ebay intake in terms of quality, but I know the ebay intakes are not bad at all, and a whole lot more reliable than PVC...
Also, don't hate ebay because you bought ridiculous things. Who in there right mind would buy cheap off-brand springs on ebay? I bet they were the $50 ones, lol.
JBLover 02-21-2007, 05:17 PM I bought a $60 intake from NOPI and slapped on a K&N filter and it is great. The piping is actually really thick. It is thicker then the aluminum on an itake I had on my integra that cost $175 ten years ago.
jpv91120 04-17-2007, 12:42 PM ok, so i have had the pvc intake in for about 4 months now and have had no problems. sounds great and as for painting it and making it look all nice with all the plastic on and where the pvc starts you can't even tell it is in there. for the pvc bender, as long as you cut the pipe straight and don't load it up with glue then on the inside it is just about the same as if it where bent. if you can't see it and it is nice and smooth on the inside so it doesn't inturupt any air flow there shouldn't be a problem. just wanted to updade and let everyone know all is fine and it is working out great. as for ebay, still don't like it
ScassassinTib 04-17-2007, 04:59 PM I agree with you. It would be ok and to tell you the truth if you use the bender and dont have any couplings it would look sweet. Where it goes their is no heat so it would be fine. Good job man, take some pics of it !
ST_TIB 01-28-2008, 04:14 AM ok i have to just say that using pvc is just plain GHETTO! ebay is a great place to buy stuff. i bought tons of things and had only one problem but i contacted the seller and they replaced the part with no questions asked. i put a set of lowering springs in my 04 tib over a year ago and the tib rides and looks bad a$$. had no problems with installation. my friend bought a body kit and it fit perfectly with no problems. i also ordered a set of springs for his tib and it has no problems. so if you watch what you are buying and read about what you are buying then there shouldnt be any problems. be smart and shop smart. i know you have your plastic on to hide the pvc but what are you going to tell people when they ask what kind of in take you have? i also would hate to see your exhaust or any other mods you have done. if there was a ghetto car of the month im sure you would win hands down. but if you want to go and mod a car cheap you should go buy a tampon car. in case you dont know what that is, its a honda. they as the cheapest things to mod. real cai's are $19.95 at any local parts store.

Young_Gun 01-28-2008, 01:40 PM One time i found a ricer song on youtube and it was makin fun of hondas with custon CAI's made out of pvc pipe lol... and yeah this thread is kind of embarassing :poke:
Paul J. McCain 01-28-2008, 01:43 PM ok, i have got a few things from ebay and have had nothing but problems. Didn't you just make an intake out of PVC piping? And you get what you pay for?
Oh and no, all intakes for the Tiburon are 3".
Just because you don't know how to effectively buy things on eBay doesn't mean you should resort to making things out of PVC IMO.
zander 02-22-2008, 03:43 PM You could probably take the PVC to a muffler shop and have them bend some pipe to match your design.
