In a magazine here called Quebec Tuning they featured Hyundai.

That said they mentionned that Hyundai is making a performance line, and they showed a picture of your blower kit on the V6.

Is the rumor true?

Have you been hiding this from us? :)

Hi Guys, here's the article translated as well as a few pictures of the car....

Hyundai Performance Parts Program

Korea Counter-attacks

U
p to now, Hyundai was always considered a low-end car manufacturer. The receipe was simple: offer consumers good, very well equipped vehicles, at the lowest possible price. One must admit that the Korean manufacturer is no longer a second string player on the global auto scene. It wants a larger piece of the cake, no matter what. With its fully revamped lineup, along with some new entries in niches reserved to the automotive tenors (Veracruz, Azera, and soon, the Genesis Concept), it aspires to a brighter image. Very soon, we will be treated to a new rear-wheel drive Tiburon, and a V8 version (along with a 2-litre turbo). Yes sirree! Look out G35 and 335i...

Hyundai's new products may look very enticing, but the challenge remains a big one. The manufacturer took twenty years to build a reputation for reliability and economy. The time has come to introduce performing and exciting products to the brand... Another 10 or 20 years of work? Maybe. But rather than taking the back seat, Hyundai pulled up its sleeves and is launching a "Canada only" tuning program which figures amongst the most important in the country.

Hyundai Performance Parts
At first, Hyundai Canada's program does seem similar to those of Mazdaspeed, TRD, or Nismo. Starting mid-July, Hyundai dealers will offer parts and accessories from the Hyundai Performance Parts catalogue. As is the case for its competitors, the HPP parts will not affect the vehicle's warranty, and the buyer will be able to finance it all at the time of purchase. What is out of the ordinary, is that Hyundai Canada will not rely on the parent company, not even the US. In fact, the program is unique to Canada. Even the Americans cannot put together such an ambitious program. Better yet, the parts catalogue that Hyundai is about to publish, is not limited to an air filter and some suspension springs. We are talking about superchargers, complete suspension kits, large brake sets... A solid choice of not only good-looking, but high performance parts. There is nothing like concrete plans to prove the seriousness of an operation. So Hyundai modified three pre-production vehicles, two Tiburons and one Accent, to test their first series of parts and accessories. Just as Quebec is the largest buyer of Hyundai products in Canada, and that, we must admit, Quebecers are more performance oriented than the rest of Canada, Hyundai offered QT an exclusive look at its new line of parts. Better yet, it brought to our doors, its three test cars, giving us full liberty to put them through their paces. Nobody had to ask us twice.

The Affordable Fun
The Accent has seen a great success ever since its launch in the 90's – more so in Quebec. While the sub-compact has, for a long time, been the most reasonably priced in its segment, it now wants to compete at the performance level. Compacts/sub-comptacts may not show the stance nor the pure performance qualities of the real sports cars, but they can be fun and spunky, and that, without breaking the bank.
Even before using its new line of performance parts, Hyundai Canada got hold of the Accent SR Edition. This special edition of only 500 for all of Canada, can be ordered in red, silver or black, and with either a manual or automatic transmission.
Visually, the SR displays almost exactly the same styling elements as of that of the Accent shown by Hyundai at the 2005 Frankfurt auto show: an aerodynamic kit of 10 parts. As for the SR's exclusive 16-inch wheels, they were traded for a 17-inch set. A similar treatment was given to the interior, using many carbon-like accent parts. A Clarion audio unit, incorporating a removable 10-inch boom box, completes the interior.

In a perfect world, Hyundai Canada would have found a way to offer the 2-litre turbo of the show's Accent SR. In the real world, a new engine did not make it to the Board. But Hyundai did not close the door on a turbocharger made for the original 1.6-litre. Even if the parts are still on the drawing board, we would not be surprised to see them land in the showrooms within a year or two. In the meantime, the Accent SR receives a more performing air intake, and a less restrictive exhaust system that let the small 1.6-litre sing like never before.
Naturally, these improvements will not make it break the sound barrier, but suffice it to say that this configuration is definitively more attractive. To confirm our first impressions, we went to the Sanair race track (www.sanairracing.com).
Sitting straight in the slightly higher seat of our test Accent SR-X, the shifter and the steering line up at the perfect spot. No need to go back on the power side of things. In the straightaway, nothing doing... the Accent rides like all small sub-compacts... slowly. This being said, the new B&M shifter helps shorten shifting time, and more importantly, it considerably improves the shifting precision. This was a weak point of the original Accent, especially compared with the Japanese competition. The four disk brakes also get good points. At the end of the straightaway, the Accent SR-X brakes with more bite than the original version. It nose-dives predictably for this type of vehicle, and the frame twists a bit under a good dose of trailbraking. Helped by the Eiback Pro sport springs and the Falken FK 452 205/40.17, understeering is kept to a minimum, and despite the roll, at least three wheels solidly grip the asphalt. Full throttle out of the tight turn, the Accent pushes all the power it can get out of the 110 HP (about 7 to 10 HP more with those toys), through the front wheels. The original differential causes no problems. With a turbocharger, the case would be quite different, and the addition of a good LSD would be required.

A 4 And A 6 For The Shark
We really had fun putting the Accent through its pace, from one turn to the other. That it is still working and on its four wheels after this shake-down, proves that it got spunk. Now, on to the two Tiburons. The first one, the black Tiburon Coupe, has a 2-litre 4 cylinder engine producing 138 HP (about 7 to 10 more with the toys). Unfortunately, its performance in the straightaway will never break any records. It still drags, despite a sport air filter and the Hyundai Performance exhaust system. Indeed, the fourth generation Eaton MP62 supercharger is currently in its final design phase. Too bad, as it promises a gain of more than 80 HP with that yoy, along with a 7 psi boost, for a total of about 218 HP. Not bad for a small four. This being said, Hyundai took this time to concentrate on the Tiburon's braking and cornering abilities. The suspension was modified with a K-Sport spring and shock absorber kit that can be set in 36 different positions. The part is so neat, you would want to frame it and display it in your living room. The car's handling is also helped by DC Sports sway bars, and a set of Fast F66 Version 5 wheels mounted on Falken Azenis 215/45/17 RT-615 tires. Speaking of wheels, Hyundai opted for a slightly unorthodox way of doing things. Let me explain. Instead of giving clients one or two sets of light alloy wheels, it offers any wheels available from the Quebec manufacturer Fast Wheels catalogue. In this case, the F66 were preferred for their featherweight (17 lbs) and their rigidity.
Hyundai wants to appeal to performance seekers. You would not be surprised then to see Stoptech 4-piston disk brakes in the front, and grooved disk brakes in the rear, along with braided stainless lines for an optimal response. The main course suggested is a bit lean on the power side, but it is perfectly at ease on the race track. At Sanair, the Tiburon takes turn after turn without ever losing any of its braking power. You can always brake harder, shorten the braking zone, without any loss at the pedal. Coming out of the S's, at full throttle, the Tiburon stays glued to the track, the inside front wheel nicely suspended in the air through the chicane.
For marketing reasons rather than by real necessity, Hyundai decided to please audiophiles with two subwoofers, and a Clarion amplifier well seated on the trunk floor. Only, the car's utility suffers.
Our second Tiburon, the blue one, was equipped with a supercharger. The fourth generation MP62 Eaton charger, similar to the one soon available on the 4 cylinder, compresses the air in our 2.0-litre V6. The V6 torque, kicking in the low RPMs, combined with the additional power from the supercharger in higher gears, make it an ideal street machine. To our great surprise, the torque effect on the steering wheel is almost non existent. A rarety on more powerfurl rear-wheel drives. In its configuration (Stage 1), the gain is 65 HP at only 4 psi. Stage 2 gives you 100 HP at 7 psi. The original suspension makes this Tiburon a nicely tamed machine, good for everyday use.
As with any other naturally-aspirated 4 cylinders, Hyundai made sure not to attract too much attention to it. The body is therefore low-key. Only the 4 exhaust pipes under the rear bumper can point to the 237 HP under the hood. Indeed, hats off to the designers of this ensemble, strangely similar, with a few exceptions, to the recent Porsche 911.
All this additional piping under the hood that make the 6-cylinder sing high and strong, requires more. The Weapon-R air intake takes care of feeding oxygen to the engine. There will soon be a new version, which will include a battery displacement kit so the air filter can get a breath of fresh air from the lower front corners of the grille. There is also a DC Sports 2.5" dia.3-in-1 exhaust manifold, along with a complete exhaust system, including chrome tips. And to make everything legal, there is a Vibrant catalytic converter.
The sound is so cavernous that you would think it's a race car. And what about that blower under the hood; you can hear it from quite far when the right foot is to the floor. Sweet music to our ears... Reading through the specs, we realized that Hyundai touched on numerous other small details of the Tiburon. For example, the additional power would probably have worn the original clutch prematurely, so it was traded for a Clutch Masters Stage 4. And the flywheel is now a 9 lbs. Fidanza.

A Complete Program
While the Accent SR-X is not a racing car, we had fun with it on the track. One must appreciate its capacity to let you have fun, and bring you back home without whining, and that, without having to remortgage the house. As for the two Tiburons, they offer you the chance of owning a personnalized performing sports coupe, at a reasonable price. The V6 is the right choice for everyday driving, but my little finger tells me that the supercharged 4 cylinder option will be hard to beat: $22,000 for the car, $4,000 for the compressor, another $4,000 for the brakes and suspension that you would find on a way more expensive sports car, and finally, $2,000 for high end wheels and tires... One heck of a car for $32,000, and fully backed by the manufacturer's warranty. Hard to beat. .. Unless you want to wait for the next rear-wheel drive Tiburon.
